How Success Is Achieved

Success starts with mastery. Mastery comes from doing the right things the right way. You do the critical things that are going to move the needle – and you execute them the right way.

Why Doesn’t Everyone Succeed?

Here’s where it gets interesting, because the path to mastery is widely available to all. If you want to know what the right actions are and how to execute them the right way, this information is everywhere.

You can get a mentor...you can hire a coach...you can take a course. Heck, you can go to YouTube or your public library and get it the information for free.

This brings us back to the question, “Why doesn’t everyone succeed?”

Based on research and applied work with over 7,200 people in past 19 years, we have found there are three reasons.

1. Lack of Action

The first one is obvious. If we don’t take action in the first place, we can’t possibly achieve mastery.

Recently we surveyed approximately 300 people and asked them why they don’t get started. They all said basically the same thing: “It’s hard. It’s outside my comfort zone and I find it easier to do nothing.”

The bottom line is that sometimes, we lack the discipline needed to begin. We are simply not willing to pay the price of mastery.

2. Lack of Consistent Action

Yet a lot of people do get started. They decide to learn a language, or go on a diet, or start a business – and they really DO get going.

The problem is that they don’t keep up the momentum. They don’t take action consistently.

When they run into setbacks, they get discouraged...and don’t persist long enough to attain true mastery.

3. Confidence

Even if you achieve mastery, success may still elude you.

Mastery is the starting point to success, but it’s not the whole story. Mastery is only the price of admission.

To succeed, you must have confidence. You must have an inner state that causes success to come running into your arms.

Let me explain...

Imagine you take two salespeople and teach them mastery of the exact same sales techniques. You give them a similar list of accounts to call on, and you have them dress in similar suits. Both take consistent action. They both call the same number of clients a day. Both of them ask their customers the same questions, give the same presentation, and use the exact same phrases.

Yet their sales results will not be the same. One of them will walk away with the sale, while the other will be shown the door.

The confident person will win; the person who lacks confidence will not.

The Hidden Secret to Success

This brings us to the hidden secret to success.

This secret gives you the discipline to get started. It gives you the grit to persist. And, it gives you the confidence to attract success.

The hidden secret is mental toughness.

Mental Toughness

Mental toughness is a way of experiencing yourself. When you are mentally tough, you see yourself as both capable and deserving of success. You are completely convinced of your abilities and your worth.

When you are mentally tough, other people accept your vision of yourself and put their confidence in you.

They do this because you are impervious to criticism and rejection. You believe in your natural genius and inherent goodness as a person. You instinctively reject any suggestion that you “can’t” do something, or that you are undeserving of money, love, and happiness.

It’s not that you stubbornly refuse to see your mistakes; you are more than willing to acknowledge them and improve.

It’s simply that on an energetic level, you communicate to others, “You’re in my reality now.” And your reality is that you are a competent, worthwhile person.

Let me illustrate with a little story...

For decades it was considered physically IMPOSSIBLE for a human being to run a mile under 4 minutes. This belief was so widespread it became an intense block – a mental barrier for runners all over the world.

The world record back then for the mile was 4:01.4, set in 1945.

Then Roger Bannister set his goal to be the first man to run a mile in under 4 minutes after the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

It’s really an unbelievable story, because Roger was not the most athletic guy in the bunch.

On May 6th, 1954, the stage was set at Oxford. Roger was one of an impressive field of 12.

Roger Bannister Breaks The Four Minute Mile

The race broadcast live on BBC radio, unprecedented at the time. Before an estimated 3,000 spectators, Roger ran a mile in 3:59.4.

He broke the 4 minute mile, when no one else on the planet even dreamed of it. This single act was one of the most powerful breakthroughs in human achievement in the 20th century.

You might be saying Roger was just the fastest…that he just had the most stamina…that he just trained the hardest.

Then how would you explain that less than two months later, John Landy, one of his competitors, did it too? And, by 1957, fifteen other runners accomplished the very same feat.

How did Roger do it?

First, he removed the brainwashing in his mind that told him it would be physically impossible for him to run a mile in under four minutes.

You see, Roger was studying to become a doctor when he set the goal. And when he thought about the four minute mile barrier rationally, he said, “It didn’t seem logical to me, as a doctor, that if you could run a mile in four minutes, one and a bit seconds, you couldn’t break four minutes.”

This is brilliant. What Roger did was recognize the brainwashing element of the four minute mile mental block. He said, “Wait a minute, is there any actual evidence for this belief? Or is it really just the power of suggestion?”

Then he systematically created an inner state of confidence in his ability to do it. As part of his training, Roger used visualization relentlessly to create certainty in his mind and body.

Mental toughness is the reason for the quote, “Success is an inside job.”

How to Get More Mental Toughness

So how do we do it? How do we get more mental toughness and live our dreams?

The good news is, there is a way to deliberately cultivate more mental toughness.

The bad news is, the stuff that you’re learning right now from most self-improvement books and courses is NOT the way to do it.

In fact, the polar opposite approach is much more effective. If you have done self-improvement programs before, you’ll recall that most of them teach the message that our beliefs create our reality. “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.”

This idea was made popular by the books Think and Grow Rich and The Secret and many others.

According to these books, the key to success is the law of belief: “What the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve.”

This is an important idea. The problem is that it usually only works about 50% of the time (at best).

There is an excellent reason for this. It’s because before you can BELIEVE, you must remove your inner barriers first. Whether your barrier is self-doubt, low confidence, procrastination, pessimism, poor discipline, or lack of focus, it must be removed.

Trying to paste over an inner barrier with positive thinking, affirmations, or visualization will not work.

Imagine trying to break the four minute mile without addressing your mental block around it.

Impossible.
